Akhadan,
a son of the global champion Danehill, was bred by Arrowfield
Stud and consigned to the 1995 Australian Easter Yearling sale where
he was sold for
$260,000. From there he
found his way into the stable of leading trainer Lee Freedman who
considered Akhadan had "the ability of a group class horse". That
ability carried Akhadan to a seven length victory at just his second race
start.
Akhadan made a most promising start
to his stud career earning first season sire honours in South
Australia (2001/02) with his first crop.
His sire, the recently
deceased Danehill, needs little introduction to Australian breeders.
With seven general sires titles under his belt it is sufficient to say that
his influence will be felt in this region for a long time after his
death.
Danehill already has several successful
sons at stud including Danehill Dancer, sire of the dual hemisphere
Group One winner Choisir, and Golden Slipper winners Flying Spur and Danzero.
Akhadan is from the Bletchingly mare
Wild West Lass, a full sister to champion Best Western who
accounted
for the AJC Spring Champion Stakes, Up and Coming Stakes, STC
Gloaming and Peter Pan Stakes in a
sensational three year old campaign.
Bletchingly, a leading source of the
Star Kingdom line, starred at stud, leading the general sires
premiership on three occasions. Today his son Canny Lad
represents him with distinction as do his daughters who regularly
place their sire in the top ten broodmare sires.
Group winners Redoute's Choice and West
Point share the same Danehill/Bletchingly cross as Akhadan.
