The Sir Tristram stallion Devaraja was purchased by and syndicated to
stand at Oakside Park in 1996.
Today he is the highest ranked surviving son of Sir Tristram at stud
in Australia.
Trained by
the late Peter Hayes Devaraja was a model of consistency on the
racecourse winning three from eight starts
and finishing no worse than sixth throughout his career.
At stud Devaraja made an
immediate impact producing four stakes winners, Raja Lane (Group
Three SAJC Dermody S), Prince Raja (Listed SAJC Walter Brown
Stakes), Mighty Raja (Listed SAJC Fulham Park Plate) and Develan
(Listed MVRC William Inglis Cup), from just his second crop.
His sire, the record-setting Sir Tristram, made the Australian sires
premiership his own throughout the eighties, securing the coveted
title on six occasions. His career, forged from the world famous
Cambridge Stud in New Zealand, netted forty five individual Group One
winners - a number that ranks Sir Tristram amongst the most
influential sires ever.
Sire
Tristram's sons to go to stud include the outstanding sires Zabeel
(sire of Octagonal), Maruading, Grosvenor, Kaapstad, Sovereign
Red, Military Plume and Dr. Grace. Unfortunately of those named
only Zabeel and Kaapstad survive their father and stand at stud in New
Zealand.
Devaraja's dam Khaptivaan was by
the Grey Sovereign line horse Adraan who made perhaps one of the most sensational starts to any stud
career. Sadly it was also one of the shortest.
He died with just one crop
on the ground but in that crop were the stakes winners Magic Flute, Adraanito, El Vaquero, Bataan, Adranette
and Aussie Consul. Khaptivaan herself was a talented filly
winning the Group Two AJC Surround Stakes and the Listed STC Sweet
Embrace Stakes. At stud she has produced the Group One VATC
Oakleigh Plate winner Khaptingly and the Listed SAJC KPMG Stakes
winner Khaptrist - a full sister to Devaraja.
Devaraja's second dam
Captivation is a stakes placed daughter of the champion racehorse and
sire Vain. At stud Captivation produced stakes winner Stimulus,
a Bletchingly half-brother to Khaptivaan, as well as Charming (by Sir
Tristram), the dam of Listed VATC Veuve Clicquot Stakes winner Spitz
(by Danehill).
